Reviewing iNaturalist files is much like reviewing files from any other source. Here are some tips:
Tips for reviewers
iNaturalist allows many different licenses, but the only free licenses are CC-0, CC-BY-4.0, and CC-BY-SA-4.0.
Most photos on iNaturalist are organized into observations. Observations have URLs that include inaturalist.org/observation/1234, while photos have URLs like inaturalist.org/photos/5678. You can get to the photo page by clicking the (i) icon on the observation page. The URL for that photo page identifies the specific photo uniquely and is the best URL to include in the license review template.
Sometimes the given source for an iNaturalist image is a Taxon page, with a URL like inaturalist.org/taxa/4321-Lorem-ipsum. To get to the photo page, hover over the thumbnail and click the zoom icon. Then click (i) in the modal that pops up. When you hover over the thumbnail, you will see a similar-looking (i) icon; however this will only take you back to the taxon page.
iNaturalist allows contributors to assign different licenses for photos and for the observation (metadata). The observation license, displayed under "Copyright Info and More" on the observation page, can usually be ignored. It's best to check the photo page for the photo license, which is at the top of the sidebar.
The photo page will also tell you if the original was sourced from Flickr or another external source. To upload from an external source, iNaturalist users must link their accounts using OAuth, so you can be confident that it was done by the author. If the external source is still live and has the same license, it's best to add it to the Commons file description. If it has a less restrictive license, use it as the source and update the license accordingly. If it has a more restrictive license, is dead, or has no license information at all, just review the photo as it exists on iNaturalist.
There are many sites in the iNaturalist Network. Some have sites that are subdomains of inaturalist.org, while others have unique domains. The information on each site is the same. For standardization, you may edit the URLs and change the domain to www.inaturalist.org. Please check that they still work when you do this.
If you can't find a photo on iNaturalist, try using the search tool at https://www.inaturalist.org/observations. Even if the URL given on Commons is incorrect, the author and species information are usually correct. Put the species in the Species box, and the author in the Filters > More Filters > Person box. Most people only have a few observations of the same species, so you can usually find the correct source fairly quickly.
If you detect license laundering, please also flag the photo on iNaturalist as a copyright violation by using the "Flag This Photo" link at the bottom of the photo page or the flag icon on the observation page.
It's usually best to use {{subst:Inrw}} to review the files. If the file has passed review, you do not need to include any parameters, but it is highly recommended to use {{subst:inrw|site|license|author}}. {{subst:Inrw}} will also automatically detect non-free licenses and add the appropriate copyvio tag. All rights reserved is arr, all other licenses should have dashes and not spaces (like cc-by-nc-nd-4.0). You can also use {{INaturalistreview}} directly if {{subst:Inrw}} isn't working for you, or just use the standard license review templates.
Most iNaturalist files are reviewed by User:iNaturalistReviewBot, the files that couldn't be reviewed end up here. To have the bot review the page again, just remove all parameters from the template (replace it with {{inaturalistreview}}). The bot includes a hidden |reason= parameter that can explain why the review encountered an error.
nourl means that the bot couldn't find an observation or photos URL on the page. Due to API limitations, this can also occur with photos that are only part of a taxon and not an observation. If you can fix the URL, do so and re-run the bot, otherwise review the license manually.
notmatching usually means that the photo was cropped from the original. If the original is already on Commons, remove the license review template and add {{Image extracted}}; otherwise review the file manually.
Reasons mentioning "license", apierr, or a Python exception (in CamelCase) usually indicate a connection problem. If re-running the bot produces the same error, please report the problem to User talk:iNaturalistReviewBot.
